Former Polokwane City striker Joseph Mhlongo finds new home

Former Polokwane City striker Joseph Mhlongo has found a new home after spending three months without a club.

Mhlongo parted ways with Polokwane City at the end of the 2022/23 Motsepe Foundation Championship despite helping the team gain promotion to the DStv Premiership.

The 33-year-old attacker was let go by City alongside another experienced campaigner Mpho Makola who remains a free agent.

Mhlongo was in the books of Moroka Swallows during the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons before joining Polokwane City.

The lanky striker made 26 appearances for Swallows, scoring four goals while contributing two assists.

“We are delighted to announce that Joseph Mhlongo has joined Upington City Football Club. Welcome to the team.” City announced in a statement.

Meanwhile, Bafana Ba Gucci as they are affectionately known, had a poor start to their maiden season in the Championship.

They only managed to win one game, drawing three while losing three times. Upington are sitting 13th on the log after accumulating six points.

Mhlongo will be aiming to hit the ground running and help the Northern Cape-based outfit turn their fortunes and start producing positive results.

Upington City will be looking to end their five-match winless run when they face Marumo Gallants at Isak Steyl Stadium on Saturday, 21 October. Kickoff for that match is scheduled for 15:30.

The Thulani Nkosi-coached team last tasted a victory on the 2nd of September when they beat Venda Football Academy 2-1 at Windhoek Draught Park.
