League title or cup competition: Gavin Hunt picks what’s important to him

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has picked what’s more important to him between winning the league title or a cup competition.

Hunt is one of the most successful coaches in the PSL known for winning trophies.

He has won four league titles, MTN8, Telkom Knockout [now called Carling Knockout Cup], Nedbank Cup and Absa Cup with SuperSport United and now-defunct Bidvest Wits.

However, in the recent seasons, the 59-year-old has been struggling to win a silverware. The last time he lifted one was back in the 2017/18 season [Telkom Knockout with Bidvest Wits]

GAVIN HUNT SAYS HE PREFERS WINNING THE LEAGUE TITLE TO CUP COMPETITIONS

The mentor says winning the league title is very important to him.

“I’m an old-fashioned [coach], the league is more important for me, I’m really a league guy,” said Hunt.

“I always tell, the best clubs is where you off after 30 games. We have the referees like what’s been going on this season and that and the decisions. But if you look at the end of the season after 30 games if you are third or fourth or second you are the second-best team.

“You could have won two cups, but obviously the cup competitions are very lucrative for the club owners, the players and it creates a vibe, it’s very good.

“We are very fortunate in this country to have all these cup competitions. But for me, the league is very super judged.”

GAVIN HUNT MAKES REFERENCE TO AFRICAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Hunt further made reference to the new competition the African Football League [AFL]. Its participants were picked from each of the top-ranked leagues on the continent.

“It’s like going to this African super competition [AFL] now. We should be looking at the last 10 years who has come where in the league then we judge from there,” Hunt added.
