AmaZulu FC net late to sink Chiefs in Carling Cup

AmaZulu FC netted a late winner in the Carling Knockout Cup to eliminate Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday night.

Chiefs welcomed AmaZulu at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon in the CKO as they look to end their eight-year trophy drought.

Amakhosi have already missed out on the first silverware of the season after being eliminated from the MTN8 two-legged semi-finals by Mamelodi Sundowns.

Sundowns subsequently lost 3-1 on penalties in the MTN8 final by Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida on the 7th of October.

Meanwhile, the Glamour Boys have had an inconsistent start to the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season

Chiefs won three games, drew three and lost four times in seven games played. They are sitting eighth on the log after accumulating 11 points.

Chiefs came close to finding an opener in the 24th minute after Ranga Chivaviro. He unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box but it was tipped over by AmaZulu goalie Veli Mothwa.

Chivaviro had another opportunity to open his goal-scoring account for Chiefs but he headed over the bar.

Referee Abongile Tom blew the half-time whistle with Chiefs and AmaZulu deadlocked at 0-0 stalemate.

The opening minutes of the second half were a tight affair with both sides struggling to create goal-scoring chances.

Chiefs head coach Molefi Ntseki made double substitutions in the 64th minute. Edson Castillo and Jasond Gonzalez replaced Yusuf Maart and Ranga Chivaviro.

Usuthu brought in former Chiefs midfielder George Maluleka alongside Wayde Jooste as they pushed for a late goal.

AmaZulu got the solitary goal of the game in the 87 minute through Taariq Fielies. The KZN-based side held on to knock Chiefs out of the Carling Knockout Cup.
