Jose Riveiro’s verdict on Evidence Makgopa’s first Pirates start

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has given his verdict on striker Evidence Makgopa’s first start at the club.

Makgopa finally made it in the starting line-up for the first time against struggling Cape Town Spurs in the Carling Knockout Cup on Friday since linking with the Bucs at the beginning of the 2022/23 PSL season from Baroka FC.

His lack of some minutes was due to a long-term injury setback and lack of fitness. This also cost him his place in the Bafana Bafana squad.

The 23-year-old had a good match playing almost 80 minutes and provided an assist to Kermit Erasmus.

JOSE RIVEIRO ON EVIDENCE MAKGOPA’S FIRST START

“Well played, I will do an exception, it’s his first game with us,” said Riveiro.

“A player who has been with us for 15 months, coming to the first 11 for the first time. Having the behaviour that Evidence had during that time [lacking gametime] I can say he was excellent, a true professional.

“As a coach, I’m so happy to see him finally getting a chance, it doesn’t mean that everything is done because the competition is terrible in that position. But I’m happy that finally, he managed to make it in the starting 11 and contribute.

EVIDENCE MAKGOPA HAS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

Riveiro further revealed that there is still room for improvement in Makgopa’s game. This will only happen as he’s getting more game time.

“Due to his conditions and age, he’s a player that can only improve, he will only improve in the next months. Obviously, if he manages to play frequently, the improvement will be more.

“He’s a humble guy that is working very hard to be there. The only result for him is improvement, so hopefully we can see that improvement soon,” Riveiro added.
