Carling Knockout Cup Round of 16: Meet the 8 MoM winners

The Carling Knockout Cup Round of 16 was concluded on Sunday after Polokwane City FC thrashed SuperSport United 4-1. Eight players won the Man of the Match [MoM] award walking away with R100,000 each as voted by fans.

In this competition, the MoM prize money has been the biggest talking point. There were surprise winners like Keagan Dolly, Andile Jali, and Khanyisa Mayo as their respective teams lost on the day.

FARPost writer, Otis Ntshangase looks at the eight players who won the Man of the Match award in the Round of 16.

MLUNGISI MBUNJANA

Mlungisi Mbunjana played a huge role in helping TS Galaxy defeat Mamelodi Sundowns 5-4 on penalties. The opening match of the Carling Knockout Cup had ended 2-2 after 120 minutes.

He was solid in the midfield and he scored Galaxy’s second goal.

KHANYISA MAYO

Bafana Bafana international Khanyisa Mayo walked away with the Man of the Match award despite Cape Town City FC suffering a 3-1 defeat against in-form Golden Arrows.

Mayo had an average game as he only provided an assist to Taahir Goedeman.

THEMBINKOSI LORCH

Lorch made his first Orlando Pirates appearance of the season in the 2-0 victory against Cape Town Spurs following a long injury layoff.

He was active in the final third for the Bucs at Orlando Stadium. However, he didn’t find the back of the net or provide an assist.

IQRAAM RAYNERS

Rayners was incredible as Stellenbosch FC defeated Chippa United 2-1. He gave his all and had many goalscoring opportunities, however, it wasn’t meant to be.

The 29-year-old turned provider to substitute Kgaogelo Sekgota, who scored the winning goal in the 58th minute.

JAMIE WEBBER

Midfield maestro Jamie Webber showed his class again as he bossed the midfield against Royal AM to win the MoM accolade in the Carling Knockout.

Sekhukhune United went on to win the encounter 1-0 courtesy of Maloisane Mokhele’s strike in the second half.

Kaizer Chiefs star Keagan Dolly displayed a good performance in the Carling Knockout against AmaZulu FC despite a narrow 1-0 defeat at FNB Stadium.

Dolly was causing all sorts of problems for Usuthu in the final third trying to score or to provide an assist.

ANDILE JALI

Jali showcased an average performance in the middle of the park as Moroka Swallows lost 2-1 against Richards Bay FC.

The former Sundowns star failed to make a great impact to help the team get the desired outcome.

NDUMISO MABENA

Mabena was excellent as he won the MoM in the Carling Knockout as league returnees Polokwane City FC thrashed SuperSport United 4-1 on Sunday at TUT Stadium.

The former Pirates striker was unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet, however, he provided an assist to Oswin Appollis, who opened the scoring.
