How Toronto FC has fared since Cassius Mailula’s arrival

While goals have remained elusive for former Mamelodi Sundowns winger Cassius Mailula, his side Toronto FC has remained stagnant since his arrival.

The former Sundowns attacker Mailula joined Toronto FC at the tail end of July.

He agreed to a three-year contract, that saw him became the latest South African to join the Major League Soccer in the USA.

Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Njabulo Blom are the other players in the Major League Soccer.

Three months down the line, the talented winger who used to score for fun in SA is yet to break the goal duck, having been restricted to cameo appearances.

HOW MAILULA HAS FARED AT TORONTO FC

So far, he has featured in three matches out of the 11 played in all competitions since his arrival.

The 22-year-old missed four matches due to injury while he was an unused substitute in the other three matches.

He was on the bench when they endured their latest 2-0 defeat at the hands of Orlando City on Sunday.

They last won 31 August when they beat Philadhephia Union 3-1 albeit in Cassius Mailula’s absence.

HOW TORONTO FC HAS PERFORMED SINCE CASSIUS MAILULA’S ARRIVAL

Sadly, Toronto FC remain at the basement of the MLS Eastern Conference standings with 22 points on their tally.

Infact, they have been the punching bag of the league, a development that has seen Mailula lose his place in the Bafana Bafana squad.

Before switching to the United States, Mailula had a trailblazing season with Mamelodi Sundowns, banging 15 goals in 31 matches across all competitions.

What made it special is the fact that he was in his first season in the club’s first team, after graduating from the juniors.

The Limpopo-born winger was a vital cog  as the Tshwane giants secured their sixth consecutive PSL title.

As such, Mailula broke into Bafana Bafana squad, to make his debut in the AFCON qualifiers on 24 March against Liberia.

However hopes are high that Mailula will be able to reinvent himself and probably find his place in Hugo Broos’ squad when they plunge into the 2023 AFCON finals.
