Mokoena on how fans have let Sundowns down in Champions League

Mamelodi Sundowns FC midfielder Teboho Mokoena has spoken out on how the fans have let them down when they host CAF Champions League matches.

The 26-year-old was speaking ahead of his side’s African Football League quarter-final return tie against Pedro de Luanda.

The match will be played at the Loftus Versfeld stadium on Tuesday evening at 19:00. Bafana Ba Style beat the Angolan club 2-0 in the first leg on Saturday to put one leg in the semi-final.

Mokoena, in a subtle way, did not shy away from acknowledging the lack of support they have endured in the past whenever they played Champions League home games.

The Bafana Bafana star believes the lack of support, particularly when the fans are not singing is what contributes to them not being at their best.

On the other hand, he feels when they play away, the fans of the opposition always do what they can to make them feel uncomfortable.

“Yeah, last year when we played Wydad [Casablanca] in the second leg, I think what the fans let us down is that they couldn’t sing the whole game,” said Mokwena.

“For us when we play away games, we can’t even hear our voices in the field because there [fans] are singing the whole game and they are booing us, but whereas they come play here at home, our fans are just quiet, and that is what is letting us down as South Africans.”

The Tshwane-based outfit has opted to offer fans a free entrance in a match against Petro De Luanda.

Sundowns will be looking forward to using the home advantage to seal the game as they aim to grab the spot in the last four.
