Former Kaizer Chiefs defender turns to coaching
Ex-Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi defender Sibusiso Khumalo is now pursuing a career in coaching after 15 years playing in the professional ranks.
Khumalo, now 34, last played in the PSL for Venda FC during the 2021/22 season.
He has also played for clubs such as Moroka Swallows, Black Leopards, SuperSport United and Ajax Cape Town. Last season Khumalo was playing for KwaZulu-Natal ABC Motsepe League side Stone Breakers FC.
COACHING A NEW PASSION FOR FORMER KAIZER CHIEFS DEFENDER
Khumalo now holds a SAFA D coaching license but has also expressed intentions of studying further. He is currently the coach of the under-8 and 13 kids at Highway United in KwaZulu-Natal.
“I find [coaching] interesting because now I have found young kids. So this is how I want to give back to KZN,” he told FARPost.
“If the kids get someone who knows football like I do they have a bonus because I played the game. I went to do my D-licence so I am clear with what I am doing.”
SIBUSISO KHUMALO CONTINUES TO PLAY IN THE ABC MOTSEPE LEAGUE
But Khumalo has not entirely retired from playing. On Thursday, he was unveiled as a new signing by KZN ABC Motsepe League side Durban Pioneers FC.
“It’s always a good thing to help other young players who want to go far with their careers. So I will play until where I feel like but also assist with the coaching side,” said Khumalo about his new move.
The left-back has also reflected on his professional career with words of advice to the up-and-coming players.
“I enjoyed it while I was still there [playing in the PSL]. I learned a lot from people that I have played with at different clubs. The most important thing is that I enjoyed my career, that’s why I stayed long in the game because I was giving all that I had.
“So all those who also want to stay longer on football need to take their careers seriously and stop worrying about football politics. One day football will reward you.”
