Is Cavin Johnson Chiefs’ solution? Lucas Radebe answers

Legendary former Kaizer Chiefs captain Lucas Radebe has weighed in on the debate about whether Cavin Johnson is the right coach to lead the Glamour Boys to the promised land.

Johnson was thrown into Amakhosi’s hot seat on an interim basis on Monday following the departure of Molefi Ntseki.

Radebe had heavily criticised the appointment of Ntseki as head coach in June, stating that it was a mismatch. The Chiefs legend argued that the former Bafana Bafana mentor doesn’t have a rich history and pedigree at the highest level of SA football to coach a team of Amakhosi’s calibre.

The Soweto giants’ move to have Ntseki at the helm backfired as the club had a poor start to the season under his guidance. The Amakhosi faithful even went as far as expressing their dissatisfaction in a violent matter by hurling objects at Ntseki four times in the new season.

And with Chiefs having already missed out on two trophies this season, the MTN8 and Carling Knockout Cup in their quest to end their eight-year trophy drought, the club replaced Ntseki with Johnson, who promised to bring back the glory days at Naturena.

Chiefs Need More Experienced Coach to Meet Expectations, SAYS LUCAS RADEBE

However, one of the biggest icons in Chiefs’ history, Radebe has expressed serious doubts about interim coach Cavin Johnson. Rabede questioned whether Johnson has the experience and ability to lead Chiefs back to their former glory.

“I don’t know,” he said when asked if Johnson is Amakhosi’s solution. “To be honest, for me, I’m not sure anymore because I mean this is a big brand, Kaizer Chiefs.

“And there are a lot of expectations for the club. Everybody knows it is a massive club that needs a big push. It needs character and attitude to get back to that level again.”

Johnson has been around the block, having coached several teams in the DStv Premiership, such as SuperSport United, AmaZulu FC, and the now-defunct Platinum Stars.

His most significant achievement is winning the Egyptian Premier League and CAF Champions League as an assistant coach to Pitso Mosimane at Al Ahly.

But as a head coach, he has yet to win any silverware and lead a big team.
