Cavin Johnson explains Mmodi’s absence in Chiefs loss against Arrows

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson has explained the absence of Pule Mmodi from the matchday squad in the clash against Golden Arrows.

Amakhosi suffered a 2-1 defeat against Arrows in the DStv Premiership on Saturday at Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammarsdale, Durban.

The loss to Abafana Bes’thende was the first match for Johnson in charge of Chiefs since taking over the hot seat from Molefi Ntseki on an interim basis.

Ntseki was shown the exit door by the Soweto giants citing a poor start to the 2023/24 season. The former Bafana Bafana mentor was at the helm for four months after being appointed in June.

CAVIN JOHNSON SHED LIGHT ON MMODI’S UNAVAILABILITY

Johnson has opened up about why Pule Mmodi missed the opportunity to play against his former side Arrows. The attacker joined Chiefs during the off-season from the KZN-based side.

“I don’t think I made many changes, the changes I made were probably because the players you used to seeing are all out,” said Johnson.

“Players like Ashley [Du Preez], [Edmilson] Dove, and Pule Mmodi were not out because they were unavailable. It’s the change we tried so that we can see something else.

“We tried to shuffle a little bit. There were some changes. I’m not saying there weren’t changes.

“I thought the team played better. I thought they put a good shift but they go home sad because they know in their hearts that they should have gotten a second goal.”

In the current campaign, Chiefs won three games in the league, drawing two and losing five times in 10 matches.

Meanwhile, Chiefs’ eight-year trophy drought is set to stretch for longer after losing in the MTN8 semi-finals against Mamelodi Sundowns earlier in the season.

They were recently knocked out of the inaugural Carling Knockout Cup last 16 by AmaZulu FC at FNB last Saturday.
