Khabo Zitha’s Women Soccer Tournament returns

Former Banyana Banyana and Mamelodi Sundowns striker Khabo Zitha Women’s Soccer Tournament returns at Muckleneuk Sports Grounds on Saturday 4 November.

The annual women’s tournament will return after it was disturbed by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 which put the whole world on a stand still.

This time around it will be a one-day event which will see 16 teams battle it out for the crown.

According to the retired striker, the aim of the tournament is to promote women’s football. This will assist young and upcoming players to get recognition as there will be scouts watching on the sidelines.

“We were hosting the tournament annually before Covid-19 pandemic disturbed us. The purpose of it is just to give back to young girls, to give them the opportunity to showcase their skills and talent and to promote women’s football in as a whole,” Zitha told FARPost.

“We marketing women’s football to benefit the young girls. I hope this tournament will bring change in young girls who are upcoming and want to play football. It’s not everyone that can play for the national team.

It’s very imparative for me as a former footballer and I was fortunate to play for Banyana Banyana. I went through some of the situations that these girls are experiencing right now.”

TEAMS THAT WILL BE PARTICIPATING IN WOMEN’S SOCCER TOURNAMENT

Zitha went on to share her happiness as they are getting interest from teams outside of Gauteng and South Africa as far as Eswatini.

“It’s a one-day 16 team knockout tournament. We have teams as far as Kwa Zulu Natal, Mpumalanga. And we still waiting for Eswatini team that is interested in taking part,” she added.
