Ex-Pirates star reveals what makes Sundowns better

Former Orlando Pirates star Isaac Chansa has revealed what he believes makes Mamelodi Sundowns the better team compared to Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

Mamelodi Sundowns have dominated the South African top-flight for the past few years, facing no serious challenge from Chiefs or Pirates.

Rulani Mokwena’s side has become a monster team in the DStv Premiership, having won six league titles consecutively since the 2017/2018 season, with some domestic cups in the process.

As a result, the Buccaneers’ former star, Isaac Chansa conceded that Sundowns’ ability to pick out quality players, more especially from South America, makes it extremely tough for Amakhosi and the Sea Robbers to bring them down.

The Tshwane giants have Marcelo Allende, Gaston Sirino, Erwin Saavedra, Junior Mendieta, and Ribeiro Costa in their set-up from the American continent this season.

‘SUNDOWNS HAVE A GOOD EYE FOR QUALITY PLAYERS’

“Sundowns have good scouts all over the place. That is their first power. Look, they have players from South America, they have been getting quality that side,” Chansa told FARPost.

“Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs have been failing to scout good players in the past few years. And even if they get some, they fail to keep the consistence.

“Sundowns know how to transition their team every season. They mix local players with those they get from South America. That’s why they beat the two Soweto teams.”

According to Chansa, it looks increasingly likely that Downs will keep their league iteration going for a further few years to come.

“Another strength of Sundowns is that they can change the so-called average players to become top players and that gives them an opportunity to win the league every season,” added Chansa. “Some players joined Sundowns from so-called small teams, look at Khuliso Mudau, Sifiso Ngobeni, Neo Maema and others.

“These players were performing weeks in, week out at their previous clubs, but not that much. Then Sundowns managed to increase their standards. It tells you there’s something good being done at that club.

“So, it goes back to scouting and the consistency of those players. “Just like I’m telling you, Mudau was a consistent player at Black Leopards for years and look at him now, he is one of the best in the country.”

The 39-year-old Chanca retired in 2019 after winning two league titles with Pirates and several cup competitions including the MTN8.
