Former Chiefs striker Zulu makes bold claim about the club’s philosophy

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker David Zulu has made a bold claim about the club’s philosophy, as Amakhosi’s dominance of the Premiership appears to be over.

Over the years, Chiefs, once dubbed the “Cup Kings of SA football” were renowned for their attacking, high-tempo, and high-intensity football.

The Soweto giants had a dominant run of form two decades ago, winning numerous trophies under coaches Ted Dumitru and Muhsin Ertugral.

Chiefs, however, last won an official trophy in the 2014/2015 PSL campaign under coach Stuart Baxter and since then, they have gone eight years without lifting any silverware.

They have already missed out on the MTN8 and the ongoing Carling Knockout Cup this season. And as a result, Amakhosi have fired coach Molefi Ntseki and appointed coach Cavin Johnson on an interim basis as they look to turn things around.

Nonetheless, Zulu, who was part of the Amakhosi team that won the Premiership title in 2014/2015 believes that Chiefs have lost their culture and identity.

KAIZER CHIEFS LOST ITS PHILOSOPHY, SAYS DAVID ZULU

“The question is what kind of football do Chiefs play? What is their philosophy? It’s difficult to point that out. What is their style of play now?” Asked Zulu in an interview with FARPost.

“Chiefs had a structure, we knew their philosophy and their style of play. Chiefs used to play beautiful football. Now, all that has gone, they have lost their philosophy.

“Kaizer Chiefs usually produce quality players and mix them with those they buy. Now we don’t see that anymore. The identity is no longer there. If the new technical team gets it right and works closely with the development side, they can become good. But they change coaches every day.

“If there is no philosophy, they are going nowhere. You cannot be consistent when you play according to the opponents’ plan. If you play every game according to the opponent’s plan, when are you going to implement your style and detect the game?

“We cannot say the Chiefs are unlucky every day. The Chiefs are not a small team. Teams must defend against Chiefs, not Chiefs defend against them. That is what is being done by Mamelodi Sundowns.”

The Glamour Boys’ first assessment under the guidance of Johnson was a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Golden Arrows last Saturday in a DStv Premiership clash at the Mpumalanga Stadium in KZN.
