‘We are a big club too’ – CT Spurs coach after Pirates win

Cape Town Spurs interim coach Sean Connor has described the big win against Orlando Pirates on Wednesday as a show of resilience.

CT Spurs collected their first DStv Premiership points of the season at the DHL Stadium after suffering eight straight defeats prior.

The Urban Warriors remain rooted at the bottom of the log but they are just three points below fellow strugglers Richards Bay, who have played a game more.

HOW IMPORTANT WAS CAPE TOWN SPURS’ WIN OVER ORLANDO PIRATES?

“First of all, we are a big club too, okay,” said Connor. “No, it doesn’t get any easier. I have just told the players now that it’s just one game.

“We started a process and that’s how we responded. We set fairly decent standards. I think to be honest with you even earlier on in the season, we probably had better performances and got defeats.

“I think what we showed tonight [last night] was resilience, belief and trust in the process. So no it doesn’t get any easier and I don’t want the players to think it gets any easier,” he said referring to upcoming games.

SEAN CONNOR ON HIS INTERIM COACH ROLE AND OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES

Connor, who previously had a short stint at Black Leopards has also explained why he took the coaching role on an interim basis. His permanent position is as the Technical Director, tasked with all football operations at Ikamva.

“When I came in I was asked about the board to take the interim role. I think the first thing I just wanted was to get more of the experienced players on the pitch. Adjust the ship slightly, try and also accommodate the players and start to develop the mentality,” he said.

“Have you seen the size of this football club? Have you seen the potential? I am ambitious and I think the CEO has a good vision for the club and he showed that vision. He wants me to develop football objectives and strategies. So it’s such a big opportunity that was an easy decision to come and work here. Very easy.”
