PSL clubs circle Botswana’s reigning Footballer of the Season

A number of South African clubs in the PSL are circling Botswana’s reigning Footballer of the Season, Benson Kitso Mangolo, with just two months left on his current contract.

The pacy full-back was recently named 2022/23 Footballer of the Season, piping Kaizer Chiefs defender Thatayaone Ditlhokwe and USM Alger’s Tumisang Orebonye to win the award.

Mangolo was in fine form as the Botswana champions defied the odds, booting out Orlando Pirates in the CAF Champions League. The Botswana national team vice-captain caught the eye of local clubs following his performances in the two-legged tie.

Interestingly, he will be a free agent ahead of the January 2024 transfer window, with his contract coming to an end next month.

FARPost has it on good authority that two clubs in the DStv Premiership and one in the Motsepe Foundation Championship have cast their eye on the 24-year-old.

Golden Arrows and Sekhukhune United are reportedly the two topflight clubs that are tracking the talented left-back. Pretoria Callies are also following the developments with keen interest.

“I’ve learned a lot under Coach Morena Ramoreboli. At this point, my ambition is to play my football in South Africa. I’m just waiting for that opportunity,” Mangolo told FARPost.

When asked if he was aware of interest from the three South African teams, he said his agent was handling his affairs. The Zebras star, who has 14 caps under his belt, was outstanding in both legs of the tie against PSL giants Orlando Pirates.

In the first leg, at home, he thrived on the attack, providing an assist and having a solo goal disallowed. In the return leg, he sat back and defended resolutely, helping the Botswana side progress to the next stage of the Champions League.

Botswana’s new season just kicked off last month, and his Galaxy will be looking to retain their league title.

Galaxy are in the same group as Simba of Tanzania, Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosas, and Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca in the Champions League.
