Jomo Sono challenges Zimbabwe’s PSL authorities

Legendary club owner and tactician Jomo Sono has challenged Zimbabwe’s PSL authorities to put more effort so as to reach the trendsetting DStv Premiership.

The revered tactician, Jomo Sono was one of the main speakers at the Zimbabwe Football Forum on Friday, along with the country’s Sports Minister Kirsty Coventry.

Jomo Sono is the second South African football administration expert to share his football wisdom in Zimbabwe this year.

First, it was SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews who graced a similar forum back in July.

However, in this one Sono took aim at the Zimbabwe’s PSL authorities, urging them to hunt for more sponsorships.

Sono said the league must have many knockout competitions, hence the need to lure more partners.

Unlike South Africa, Zimbabwe only has one knockout competition, the Chibuku Super Cup which runs yearly.

Unfortunately, the Chibuku Super Cup has only been confined to the elite league with national first division teams excluded.

WHAT THE LEGENDARY JOMO SONO SAID

On the otherhand, South Africa’s DStv Premiership has a number of them. These include, the MTN8 Cup, Nedbank Cup and the Carling Knockout Cup.

And Sono, believes the best way for Zimbabwean topflight football to improve is by increasing knockout competitions.

“What the league should do is to find their own sponsors for you guys [Zimbabwe PSL clubs]. The league must be the one raising sponsors for the tournaments.

“And then from the tournaments, they take 10% and then that will run the league, instead of crippling the teams because their lives depend on the team.

“Without the team, there is no league. If the teams say they don’t to play at the weekend, then the league is finished. The league must initiate many competitions,” Jomo Sono said.

The Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League is set to end this month, with five games remaining before the season ends.

And it is the Chibuku Super Cup final between Ngezi Platinum and Dynamos that will conclude the 2023 season.
