Riveiro’s strikers dilemma: Could a new coach be the answer?
Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has weighed in on the possibility of roping in a striker’s coach amid the club’s lack of killer instinct.
Last season, Pirates had Scott Chickelday as the club’s striker coach. Chickelday joined the Buccaneers in January 2023 to help the Soweto giants solve their goalscoring problems.
However, his stay with the DStv Premiership giants was short-lived as he left the side in February 2023.
Chickelday is not the first striker coach to have worked at the Sea Robbers. The likes of Stephane Adam also worked at Pirates as striker coach back in the 2018/19 season during Milutin Sredojevic’s tenure.
JOSE RIVEIRO ON ROPING IN STRIKER COACH
The Spanish mentor made it clear that they are trying many ways to get back to their scoring ways, as the club is not intending to rope in a striker coach.
“No, the play has more relevance in the way of playing than the coaches in general,” said Riveiro when asked about the possibility of roping in a striker coach.
“I try to adopt the game plan and all the things we do depending on who is on the field. There’s always little adoption depending we play with [Karim] Kimvuidi as a 10 or we play with Romeo [Kermit Erasmus].
“So, We try to mitigate our problem in front of the goal. Not entirely problems but obstacles I may say, trying to find all the ways to score the goals.”
Riveiro continued: “Today [last night], the goal came in a combination from central full of quality and talent of the players who came in to play one-twos in the areas we want. Sometimes we also need to open the field as we always try to find different ways to score goals depending on who’s on the field.
“Like I used to say, I’m not worried because I’m busy with the situation. We need to score early in the game. Obviously, when you go in the last 30 minutes of the game with the quality in the league with the games broken anything can happen in that scenario. So, we need to find the net early or too early in the games.”
ORLANDO PIRATES’ NEXT GAME
Now, Pirates will shift their focus on the DStv Premiership Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, 11 November 2023. The kick-off is set for 15:30.
