‘It’s a disgrace’ – Gavin Hunt on match officiating

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt was left fuming over the match officiating after their draw against Polokwane City on Wednesday evening.

Hunt’s men missed out on a chance to leapfrog Mamelodi Sundowns into position one in the DStv Premiership following the 1-1 draw at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

But the log position was the last thing coach Hunt was worried about. The four-time title-winning coach was left unimpressed with referee Tshidiso Mkwanazi and his assistants Oscar Tsotetsi and Romario Phiri.

Three incidents Hunt raised include Etiosa Ighodaro’s goal in the dying minutes which was ruled offside. United players also shouted for a penalty after what looked like the ball had hit a Polokwane City defender on his hand but the protest fell on deaf ears.

Hunt has also questioned the free kick which the hosts got prior to their equaliser by on-form defender Thabang Matuludi. Matsatsantsa scored their goal through second-half substitute Ighodaro.

“I mean we should have won the game but it’s a disgrace,” said Hunt.

“What’s going on here? It’s actually embarrassing what went in here. But anyway I am proud of the players. But what can we do?

“No you won’t [get explanations from match officials] and the penalty?” said Hunt when asked if the match officials explained the decisions.

“We have to blame ourselves a little because we missed chances but it wasn’t a free kick for their goal. So anyway just the overall thing tonight, the way it was handled,” he added.

SUPERSPORT UNITED NOT CONCERNED ABOUT MISSING OUT ON POSITION ONE

The result means SuperSport United remain second on the log with 23 points, one behind Sundowns. But the defending Champions have played three games less.

“I am not worried about that [missing out on being number one]. You have a small squad, we just need to do the best that we can. That’s what we can do, take one game at a time, but it is what it is. It’s unbelievable,” he added.

“Obviously we haven’t played a home game yet, but we are fine. We are doing the best we can.”

United will play Sekhukhune United at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday, 12 November.
