Teary-eyed Rulani Mokwena reacts to Sundowns’ historic AFL triumph
An emotional teary-eyed Rulani Mokwena has reacted to Mamelodi Sundowns’ historic African Football League [AFL] triumph following their 2-0 win over Wydad Athletic at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Goals from Peter Shalulile and Aubrey Modiba were enough to get the better of the Moroccan side, securing the inaugural CAF AFL title in front of 50 thousand fans.
Bafana Ba Style were crowned the AFL champions after defeating Wydad 3-2 on aggregate. Mokwena’s troops etched their name in history as the first-ever champions of the AFL.
Masandawana came into this encounter with a 2-1 goal deficit from the first leg played in Morocco last weekend. But Sundowns with the home support saw them fight back to secure the much-needed victory.

Mokwena reckons that the element of fortune needed to claim the AFL title fell on their side at Loftus Versfeld.
“Congratulations to this amazing group of players. I’m just very lucky to be their coach,” said Mokwena in a post-match interview with SABC Sport.
“It’s for the fans, the Yellow Nation, and for this magnificent group of players, the technical team, and the chairman. Unbelievable support he has shown to me.”

The 36-year-old mentor went on to praise God for this achievement, citing that “God loves us all.”
Coming into this game, Mokwena was wary of the difficult test Wydad Athletic would provide given the fact that they have experienced players who are capable of dealing with big occasions [big games].
“It’s difficult to talk. The conditions are very difficult but God is good and he loves us all,” he added.
With that being said, Sundowns walked away with a whopping R75 million prize money for winning the AFL title.
