Komphela seeks to address overreliance on one player

Moroka Swallows coach Steve Komphela has admitted that his team is overreliant on one player and is looking to address the issue before it becomes a problem.

Swallows played out to a 0-0 draw against Polokwane City at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday

Swallows have scored 11 goals in their 10 DStv Premiership this season, the least number of goals of the top five teams.

Komphela believes that the struggle to score goals by his men is due to the fact that they rely on one particular player as their main source of goals.

STEVE KOMPHELA WANTS OVERRELIANCE ON TSHEGOFATSO MABASA TO STOP

Six of those goals were scored by on-loan striker Tshegofatso Mabasa. But Komphela wants his players to take more responsibilities in the final third and not rely on Mabasa for goals.

“In our final third, we need to be clearer and better so that we can then start scoring,” he said.

“It shouldn’t be that when Mabasa is not scoring then we do not get goals. so we have to work on that,” added Komphela.

“But in terms of the build-up from the back, perfect, in the midfield, perfect. Even though sometimes I think we expose the ball, we should be keeping it more on the ground and take it from there. So we just have to go and work on maybe creating that moment where there is a clear goalscoring opportunity.”

ANOTHER CLEAN SHEET FOR MOROKA SWALLOWS

The draw also meant Swallows kept their fourth clean sheet in the league this season. Something coach Komphela was pleased about.

“That is the plus from a defensive point of view. Though we know by our desire and our standards, a clean sheet is okay. Had it been another day we would be unlucky and they would score. So you have to be tight so that the opposition must ask themself, how are we going to penetrate these people?” said Komphela.

The Dube Birds will host Kaizer Chiefs when the league resumes after the FIFA break on 26 November.
