Ighodaro makes an honest admission on the prospect of playing for Nigeria

With the AFCON edging closer, SuperSport United on-loan striker Etiosa Ighodaro has opened up about his chances of representing the Nigerian national team.

With five goals already in all competitions, Ighodaro has made an impact in the SuperSport side since joining from Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 24-year-old has never been capped by his national team; Nigeria.

The Super Eagles currently have top strikers such as Kelechi Iheanacho and Victor Osimhen leading their attack. Ighodaro does admit that at this stage, it will take a miracle for him to break into the squad.

SUPERSPORT UNITED STRIKER ON HIS NIGERIA NATIONAL TEAM CHANCES

“Playing for my country is very tough. There are a lot of good strikers who are doing well in the top five leagues in Europe. For me, I have to do more or go places for me to at least get a place [in the national team],” he said.

“There is Victor [Osimhen] playing in the UEFA Champions League, Awey playing in England, there are a lot of strikers. Maybe a miracle will happen I don’t know or the coach would be fond of me. But I feel like it would be tough to be even considered for the Africa Cup of Nations.”

“They do keep in touch [National team officials]. Obviously, as a striker, they have to keep pushing you. Those guys are going to get old someday so I have to wait for my chance,” he added.

Nigeria have been drawn in Group A at the Afcon tournament in Ivory Coast. They are in the same group alongside hosts Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. They will open their tournament on 14 January against Equatorial Guinea in Abidjan.
