Hunt’s valuable advice for players eyeing a transition into coaching

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has offered valuable advice to current players aspiring to become coaches in the future.

Hunt, who is a seasoned PSL coach with years of experience and major trophies under his belt is amongst the 25 coaches attending the CAF A License coaching course at the SAFA house.

Hunt’s insights stem from his extensive knowledge of the game and his understanding of the qualities that make a successful coach.

The former Kaizer Chiefs mentor Hunt, Steve Barker of Stellenbosch FC and Cape Town City’s Eric Tinkler are the three DStv Premiership coaches who enrolled for the CAF A License coaching course.

Hunt remains one of the most decorated coaches in South Africa. The tactician, who won four career league titles says current players must get their coaching badges while they still playing.

GAVIN HUNT SUGGESTS PSL PLAYERS ATTAIN COACHING QUALIFICATIONS

“I think in their spare time or maybe in the June month [off-season], instead of players lying around for that three or four weeks, they should be attending coaching courses,” Hunt said.

“The introductory level and people pay to go on it and sometimes it’s amazing with coaching out there.

“You know I’ve coached players and you say this one is going to be a good coach and this one doesn’t have a chance.

“The one’s we think don’t have the ability end up being good coaches because it brings something out of them.

“The only way they are going to get better is by coming on a coaching course at entry level and working their way through.

“They can also be redeployed back at the clubs. We are trying to do that at my club, getting our coaches to do their licenses.”

Meanwhile, Hunt has had a good start to the 2023/24 campaign with SuperSport as they occupy second place on the log with 23 points.

The Tshwane-based side won seven games in the league, drawing two while losing three times in 12 matches. They are one point behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who are on 24 points with games in hand.
