Steve Barker speaks on Junior Mendieta’s growth at Sundowns
Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker has opened up on what makes him happy for his former player Junior Mendieta, who is now in Mamelodi Sundowns’ books.
The highly-rated, Junior Mendieta joined Mamelodi Sundowns at the start of the current campaign.
Curiously, Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker was eager to hold on to him as he was one of their best players last season.
But the Argentine midfielder opted to join the Brazilians and he rightly agreed to a four-year deal.
Infact, he was a perfect replacement for Haashim Domingo, who had just left the Tshwane giants.
Last season, Mendieta was arguably one of the best midfielders in the DStv Premiership after managing 10 goals and nine assists in all competitions for Stellenbosch.
He however struck the right chords when he joined Sundowns, where he has already won big in less than half a season.
Mendieta is part of the traiblazing Masandawana side that won the maiden African Football League.

And Stellenbosch coach Barker has opened up on why his is buzzing over the 30-year-old’s rapid growth.
“The growth has been more and financial rewarding, which is nice. Junior Mendieta came to South Africa, he has a difficult background, a difficult upbringing,” said Barker.
“He came to South Africa to enhance his career and help his family. One can be proud, that he sacrificed and left his country, to a different country and to move to a club like Sundowns.
“And the success that they are having, and to be part of that success. It’s good for us as a club, seeing them improve their lives.”
So far, Mendieta has featured in 20 matches in all competitions for Sundowns.
In addition, he has managed to score two goals while providing three assists to the team’s cause.
Moreover his availabilty has enhanced competition in the Sundowns ranks, as he is comfortable playing on both wings. He can also play as an attacking midfield.
