What has surprised Shaun Bartlett about Bafana Bafana

Bafana Bafana legend Shaun Bartlett has revealed what has left him surprised lately about the national team.

South Africa are currently top of Group C of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers after a 2-1 win over Benin at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Despite poor support when they play at home, South Africa have only lost one match in the last 12 months.

The second all-time Bafana goal scorer has been left impressed with the national team’s performances and admits it’s a bit of a surprise.

“For the last few games they have done really well, they have surprised some of us and in certain games,” said Bartlett.

RESULTS MATTER MORE THAN ANYTHING IN WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS

“I think when it comes to the results that it is all about. Sometimes you don’t need the best performance in order to get results and in order to qualify for the World Cup and that’s what you need to do. We just need to get points on the board, that’s important.

‘As the confidence grows and everybody is available I think the players will get better or come together. So there will be a bit of nerves for some players who have not played in World Cup qualifiers before. There should be nerves because it shows obviously you care about what you are doing,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hugo Broos and his squad arrived safely in Rwanda in the early hours of Monday morning. They will take on The Wasps in their second qualifier match on Tuesday at 15:00.

The former Charlton Athletic star wants players to always remember the importance of wearing the Bafana jersey.

“That’s always been the pride of every player in the national team. You got to take the honour of representing your country very seriously and give your 100 percent effort for every match you play,” he added.
