Gavin Hunt’s challenge to SuperSport United youngsters in Confed Cup

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has thrown a challenge to the club’s youngsters ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup group stages campaign.

Since Hunt returned to the club, he has been depending on the youngsters like Thapelo Maseko [now at Mamelodi Sundowns] they have impressed a lot.

This season is no different as SuperSport have youngsters like Shandre Campbell, Risen Albert, Kegan Johannes, and Ime Okon in their squad.

SuperSport qualified for the group stages of the Confed Cup after eliminating Botswana side Gaborone United in the second preliminary round. The Tshwane side is in Group A alongside Modern Future FC [Egypt], USM Alger [Algeria], and Al Hilal Benghazi [Libya].

Matsatsantsa’s first test will be on Sunday, November 26 as they are away to Modern Future FC. Kickoff at Al-Salam Stadium, Cairo is at 3pm.

Hunt hopes his academy graduates will step up as they will get an opportunity to play. The aim is to balance the team as there are a lot of matches to be played.

“We have to try and manage this thing [squad]. These kids have to step up now a little bit and show it. It’s a great platform for them by playing in this CAF Confederation Cup,” said Hunt.

“Obviously, it’s going to be a very strange team because we have to manage this group. We’re not blessed, we have a lot of senior players and kids.

“Our squad size is a problem, I mean it’s a huge problem. Players are going to play on Wednesday as well so that thins us even more. I got to be very careful what type of team I take here [to Egypt]. I’m just trying to think about Sunday and then put a team out.”

Hunts says they have to change their playing style as North African teams play slow football.

“They are never a bad football side, obviously it’s a much slower game of football in up north,” added Hunt.

“You have to adapt, we’re going to be a team put together in the last minute. We haven’t even really worked with it.
