What halted Mpho Maleka’s move to coach abroad

Former Marumo Gallants Mpho Maleka has explained why he had to put on hold the move to coach outside of South Africa.

Maleka obtained his CAF B Licence in Zambia earlier this year.

He had been linked with roles in both the Motsepe Foundation Championship and DStv Premiership since his return.

WHY THE MOVE TO COACH IN AFRICA HAS BEEN ON HOLD

FARPost also reported that the former Moroka Swallows player also attracted interest from three African countries and it was up to the 45-year-old to accept the offers.

“There was interest from other African countries such as Sierra Leone, Rwanda, and Zambia,” said Maleka. “But they were put on hold because when I spoke to my manager we looked at the disadvantages and advantages. Where comes the ongoing CAF A Licence that’s what puts everything on hold.

“When I spoke to the SAFA technical director [Walter Steenbok], he advised me that I do qualify to be fast-tracked for the A Licence as I have played more games in the PSL.”

HOW MPHO MALEKA MISSED OUT ON ONGOING CAF A LICENCE

“The unfortunate part was that I had to wait for six months so my waiting period was not yet completed. So that’s why I am not part of the ongoing CAF A Licence. But the good thing is that I am still within my plan of going back to one of the African countries that will be able to host an A Licence as it was my plan in the beginning.

“So this has delayed me to go back and work as a coach and also locally I was on hold because my focus was to complete the Licence but that couldn’t happen. So at the moment, there is some interest locally in the Motsepe Foundation Championship and DStv Premiership. But will wait for my manager to give me the go-ahead as soon as there is that one concrete offer.”

Maleka is currently assisting Limpopo ABC Motsepe League side Giyani Happy Boys as a consultant.

“At the moment, as you know, as a coach you can’t just sit at home. You need to be active and I am actively in Limpopo with one of the ABC Motsepe League teams. I am helping with the best I can to pass on the knowledge and improve the local boys,” he explained.
