SA coach among top candidates for Indian Super League club coaching role

A South African coach is among the top candidates for the coaching role at the Indian Super League club Jamshedpur FC.

The ISL 2023/24 campaign is in the early stages having kicked off in September. Jamshedpur haven’t had a good start to the season as they have lost four, drew two and lost one of the seven matches they have played.

They are tenth on the log standings and third from the bottom. Currently, the Indian League has no relegation and this would mean there’s no drop zone to run away from.

However, the club is aiming to climb up the table to finish within the top six when the league ends in March in order to take part in the playoffs. The winners of the playoffs gain an automatic to the AFC Champions League.

And the former FC Porto and Orlando Pirates midfielder Mandla Zwane has found himself in the mix of the candidates who have been shortlisted and interviewed for the job.

Zwane, who holds a CAF A Licence, was spearheading the University of Johannesburg from 2011 to 2019 and took part in the Varsity Cup. He has also coached some of the clubs in the ABC Motsepe League.

Previously, the Soweto-born coach was also among coaches who were in consideration for the Milford FC job following the sacking of Asanda Mvalo earlier this season. However, the club’s owner Xanti Pupuma later decided to take over the coaching reins.

During his playing days, Mandla Zwane also turned out for Gil Vincente, SuperSport United, Maritzburg United, Penafiel, Selangor FC and Black Leopards.
