What Ernst Middendorp needs to fix ahead of Sundowns tie
Cape Town Spurs head coach Ernst Middendorp has divulged the areas of concern his side needs to fix ahead of their DStv Premiership clash against Mamelodi Sundowns.
Middendorp was speaking after their 3-0 humiliating defeat to arch-rivals Stellenbosch FC in a league encounter at DHL Stadium on Tuesday night.
This was Middendorp’s second successive DStv Premiership defeat since taking over the coaching reins at Spurs about two weeks ago.
So far, the Cape club has lost 12 games out of 13 matches they have played, only managing to win one.
The Urban Warriors will take on Bafana Ba Style away from home on Wednesday, 13 December 2023.
The game will take place at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. The kick-off is at 19:30.
Spurs’ poor performance after gaining promotion to the SA top flight has raised many eyebrows.
ERNST MIDDENDORP ON CAPE TOWN SPURS’ AREA OF CONCERN
The German mentor has pointed out the areas that his team needs to improve on to get better results to avoid the chop.
“Well, it’s the individual errors that’s one of the big issues. Winning mentality, one against one, midfield and in-front,” said Middendorp in a post-match interview with SuperSport TV.
“Also, the passing and keeping the ball, and decision-making in the final third instead of passing back.
“I don’t know why there’s this mentality of passing back from inside the box and moving back, something that’s quite strange. You have the possibility in front of the opponent players and you still have an idea to move back and turn back to your own goalpost.”
Middendorp continued: “There’s a number of scenarios we can go back and see what should be done differently. Sometimes is not easy to say that individual mistakes, and will be corrected.
“Is it a question of individual quality or skills are not enough? And on the other side, you have seen today and in our previous game here. We have a lot of periods where we are equal in concentration when we are playing away. But it falls apart like you don’t want to see.”
SPURS LANGUISHING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE LOG
As things stand, Spurs are languishing at the basement [16th] of the DStv Premiership log standings. The side only collected three points from 13 outings.
