Gavin Hunt highlights his main disappointment after derby loss
SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has highlighted his main disappointment after his men succumbed to Mamelodi Sundowns in the Tshwane Derby on Wednesday night.
Mamelodi Sundowns walked away with the bragging rights of the Tshwane Derby after beating SuperSport United 2-0 in a DStv Premiership clash at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Sharp-shooter Peter Shalulile and Lucas Ribeiro Costa scored the goals for the Rulani Mokwena-coached side.
This all but rubbed more salt onto Matsatsantsa’s wounds as they were coming from another defeat to Egypt’s Future FC in the CAF Confederations Cup.
And coach Gavin Hunt was left dejected especially since his men were left to rue a tale of missed chances.
WHAT DISAPPOINTED GAVIN HUNT
The former Kaizer Chiefs tactician felt his side deserved a three-goal margin before the break but lack of precision was their Achilles Heel. And that was his main disappointment.
“We had so many opportunities more than them. We could have won the game and it’s so disappointing that we didn’t,” said Hunt.
“But we will eventually commend the kids because they are working, the effort. Of course, the level is up there but still, we could have won the game. Before they we scored, we could have been two-nil or three-nil up but it is what it is. We wasted chances.
“Maybe they should be winning a little bit easier against teams like us. We did all we could but we wasted chances.”
While Sundowns returned to the top of the DStv Premiership standings, Hunt’s men remained stuck in third position with 23 points.
Cape Town City FC are now second with 25 points while the serial league winners, Sundowns have 27 points in nine matches.
Hunt’s men will now shift focus to the CAF Confederations Cup where they are slated to host USM Alger on Sunday.
In addition, they will be hunting for a win since they lost their first group match away from home. Meanwhile, Sundowns set a new PSL record following the Tshwane derby triumph.
Masandawana became the first DStv Premiership side to record nine consecutive wins from the start of the season.
The record was previously held by Kaizer Chiefs when they won eight matches on the trot during the 2014/15 season.
