Struggling Cape Town Spurs make coaching addition
Cape Town Spurs have made a coaching addition to their technical team as they look to revive their struggling side.
Spurs lost their 12th match on Tuesday, a 3-0 loss to neighbours Stellenbosch FC, further plunging towards relegation.
The Mother City club, once the beacon of youth development, have only won one match this season.
In October, the club sacked Shaun Bartlett after losing all seven opening matches of the season. Bartlett had guided them to promotion after winning the promotional play-offs.
Technical director Sean Connor stepped in as the temporary head coach but was unable to turn things around. Of course, Connor guided them to a 2-0 shock win over Orlando Pirates.
But the club went ahead and brought in Ernst Middendorp as substantive coach. Middendorp was free after cutting ties with Tanzania’s Singida Fountain Gate.
WHAT COACHING ADDITION ARE CAPE TOWN SPURS MAKING?
The club has confirmed goalkeeper coach Moses Thembalethu has joined Middendorp at Spurs. Thembalethu quit the Tanzania side a few days ago and has been unveiled by the club.
“The Urban Warriors welcome goalkeeper coach, Thembalethu Moses, to Ikamva,” the club posted on X.
Thembalethu joins the club from Tanzanian side Singida Fountain Gate, where he worked alongside Middendorp.
He is a well-respected coach in South African football and has a wealth of experience. Together with Middendorp, they will be looking to help Spurs survive relegation.
Thembalethu’s appointment is a major coup for Cape Town Spurs and will undoubtedly boost their goalkeeping department.
In addition to his coaching experience, Thembalethu is a former goalkeeper himself.
He played for a number of clubs in South Africa, including AmaZulu, Santos, Bloemfontein Celtic and Mamelodi Sundowns, before retiring in 2010.
