Chiefs secure hard-fought win against Polokwane City

Kaizer Chiefs secured maximum points after a hard-fought 1-0 win against Polokwane City at the Peter Mokaba on Saturday. The victory came via Pule Mmodi‘s goal in the 51st minute.

The win, which is their sixth in the current DStv Premiership season, takes them to position five on the log. They are 10 points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have four matches in hand.

HARD-FOUGHT WIN FOR KAIZER CHIEFS AGAINST POLOKWANE CITY

The hosts were the first to have some shots at goal with attempts from Oswin Appollis and Douglas Mapfumo going over the bar in the first few minutes.

Polokwane City came close to scoring an opener through a header from Douglas Mapfumo but Chiefs keeper Bruce Bvuma produced a spectacular save.

Chiefs’ first chance of the match came at the half-hour mark through Christian Saile but his effort was easily saved by Manuel Sapunga.

There was nothing much to write about during the first half and the two teams went into the halftime break goalless.

PULE MMODI SECOND HALF STRIKE SECURE VICTORY FOR AMAKHOSI

But six minutes into the second half, Chiefs grabbed the lead through a stunning shot from Pule Mmodi outside of the 18-yard box. A few moments later, Saile came close to doubling the lead but his shot was easily handled by Sapunga.

Mmodi was proving to be a handful on the left side for the Polokwane defence. His cross to Saile nearly resulted in the second goal but his effort went wide.

The hosts kept on knocking and a curler by Hlayisi Chauke nearly caused trouble for Bruce Bvuma.

Mmodi wasted a glorious opportunity to double Chiefs lead after a counterattack by Amakhosi 10 minutes from time.
