Webber points finger at Hunt’s tactics for SuperSport exit

Sekhukhune United midfielder Jamie Webber has revealed the tactical decision by Gavin Hunt that forced him out of SuperSport United.

Webber left Matsatsantsa during the off-season to join Sekhukhune United ahead of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.

The former South Africa youth international spent six seasons at SuperSport and made over 100 appearances in all competitions. He scored eight goals and provided 12 assists.

Webber has had an impressive start to life at Sekhukhune after featuring in 17 matches in all competitions, scoring four goals while contributing two assists.

With Webber playing his best football at Sekhukhune, he has claimed that playing out of position was the reason he left SuperSport.

The 25-year-old says Hunt played him on the right wing instead of his preferred central midfield position.

JAMIE WEBBER OPENS UP ON LEAVING SUPERSPORT UNITED

“It wasn’t easy [leaving SuperSport United]. It was my first PSL team that I played for. And I grew up in the club, I knew the players and management,” Webber said on Power FM.

“We’ve been in difficult situations together, that type of bond doesn’t just fade away. I still love Supersport, I think it’s a great club. But I felt that I needed to challenge myself.

“That’s why I came to Sekhukhune to become better. It was my decision to leave. Like I said, coach Gavin was using me as a right-winger. I felt like I wasn’t going to improve myself,” he said.

Asked what Gavin Hunt said when he told him his preferred position, Webber said: “The coach said I need to work harder. But for the time being, he’ll use me on the right wing because I’ve got good technique to cross the ball.

“So I understood why he said I have to work harder because players like Grant [Margeman] and Siphesihle Ndlovu run a lot in that position.

“They have a good energy and I think at SuperSport I didn’t have that level of energy that I have now. That’s why Gavin decided to play me on the right.”
