Cavin Johnson addresses Itumeleng Khune saga
Kaizer Chiefs‘ interim coach Cavin Johnson has addressed the Itumeleng Khune saga following the club’s decision to suspend him.
Khune was found guilty of coming to training under the influence of alcohol as first reported by FARPost. Chiefs wasted no time in taking stern action against the veteran goalkeeper.
On Thursday, 7 December 2023, Chiefs released a statement stating that Khune has been suspended. They also announced that Khune was demoted from his position as the club’s captain.
The 36-year-old goalie, the longest-serving player at Amakhosi, signed a one-year deal at the start of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.
Following Brandon Petersen’s dip in form, Johnson gave Khune the nod twice after taking over on an interim basis. Khune last featured for Chiefs on the 11th of November in the Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium.
CAVIN JOHNSON COMMENTS ON KHUNE’S SUSPENSION AT CHIEFS
While Khune remains suspended, Johnson commented on the matter, insisting that ‘we are all not perfect’.
“I think this [Itumeleng Khune situation] is something that has to be credited to management and that doesn’t mean Cavin Johnson,” Johnson said.
“It means Jessica [Motaung] Kaizer Motaung, Kemiso [Motaung], Bobby Motaung and Vina [Maphosa], all of us.
“How the club in the village is able to control that type of news because we all know that Itu is a big part of this team. But in the end, we were able to calm the players and they realised what was happening.
“And all of us are not perfect, that’s what we have to know. Whatever happens to some of our players after they play, we’re all not perfect.
“We’re just grateful that we work for an organisation like Kaizer Chiefs and they’re able to say we’ll help you. So that is what I’m grateful for, even the club statement says we’re going to help you.”
The Glamour Boys beat Polokwane City 1-0 at Peter Mokaba Stadium in the DStv Premiership on Saturday afternoon.
