Pitso Mosimane makes honest admission on Sundowns’ Champions League pursuit
Former Al Wahda FC and Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane has made an honest admission about Mamelodi Sundowns’ pursuit of the CAF Champions League title.
Sundowns are pushing to clinch their second Champions League honours after winning the trophy in 2016 under the guidance of Mosimane.
Since then, the Brazilians have been falling short in the knockout stages in the past few seasons. Last campaign, Sundowns crashed out of the Champions League in the semi-finals at the hands of Wydad Casablanca.
Before that Sundowns lost 3-2 on aggregate against Angolan outfit Pedro de Luanda to bow out in the quarter-final stages of the tournament back in April 2022.
In the current season, the Tshwane giants are currently at the summit of Group A in the Champions League which is still wide open to all the teams.
Sundowns, TP Mazembe, FC Nouadhibou, and Pyramids FC are all on four points after three games. All four teams won one game, drew one, and lost once.
Rulani Mokwena’s troops are expected to reach the quarter-final stage having already proved their pedigree by clinching the inaugural African Football League [AFL]. They beat African powerhouses such as Al Ahly in the semis and Wyad Casablanca in the final in November.
PITSO MOSIMANE ADMITS SUNDOWNS ARE CLOSE TO WINNING CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
With Sundowns eager to win their second Champions League title, Mosimane has admitted that his former club is very close to winning the prestigious trophy.
“Sundowns don’t have to call me because they doing exceptionally well,” said Mosimane in an interview on Kaya FM when asked if he would go back to Sundowns.
“They’ll win the Champions League and they’re just close to it you know. It’s like Manchester City. They have been trying but ultimately they’ll win it. And they are on the right course and they’ll go to the [club] FIFA World Cup. We’ve been to the World Cup before and they’ll do it again.”
Mosimane is currently without a club after parting ways with UAE Pro League side Al Wahda last month after the three-time CAF Champions League winner “realised we were not going in the right direction. We sat down and I asked them, ‘Are you firing me for winning? Am I leaving you for winning?’But, to be honest, it was not about the results because we had won the past two games.”
