Rulani Mokwena backs Peter Shalulile for another PSL record
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has backed striker Peter Shalulile to break a longstanding PSL record.
Shalulile scored his 111th goal in the PSL era during the 3-0 win against Cape Town Spurs on Wednesday evening. The goals are during both his stints at Sundowns and his former club Highlands Park.
The Namibian international has now surpassed club legend Daniel Mudau and current Golden Arrows coach Mabhuti Khenyeza who both scored 110 goals.
He is now 12 goals behind legendary striker Siyabonga Nomvethe who has scored 123 goals.
PETER SHALULILE BACKED TO ACHIEVE MORE GREATNESS AT MAMELODI SUNDOWNS
“Long may it continue and I wish him all the best. I think without the injuries last season maybe we would be talking that he is already the top goalscorer of the Premier Soccer League in South Africa,” said Mokwena.
“But I think with this group that he has, the teammates and the coaches around him and at this club, I am sure 100 percent he will definitely surpass that.
“Peter is such an amazing human being. I must tell you I have never seen such a focus, I really don’t have the words,” he said.
Mokwena has also described Shalulile as someone who seems to have a direct line with God.
“Peter prays for this team and when we are looking for people to pray we ask where Peter is. Even when I am going through difficulties I ask please pray for me because it seems like he has a direct line to God because he is extremely blessed.
“I am very proud of Peter but of course, with these achievements, there is someone who must have given an assist. I don’t think in those goals, I remember a lot of free kicks and penalties,” he added.
“It’s true, someone gave Peter the pass to score. So the reality is what he has achieved is not only about him. But also about the contribution of the collective. There are teammates who supplied him with the passes and created these chances,” he said.
COACH RULANI MOKWENA LAUDS THE SPECIAL GROUP OF PLAYERS AT MASANDAWANA
“I am blessed to coach this group and I say it every day. Seriously, I am extremely fortunate to be the coach at Mamelodi Sundowns with this type of Group,” said the reigning DStv Premiership coach of the season.
“With Peter, I rested some of the players and to some I said stay away I don’t want to see you. Peter said no I am coming to training. Teboho Mokoena said the same thing.
“I said can you just stay home and look after your son. He said no I am coming, so this is the type of group that I have. So I am extremely lucky and extremely fortunate because they love football and they want to play football.”
