Kompany makes odd remark after Lyle Foster return

Lyle Foster’s comeback to the pitch after facing mental health challenges was a moment of joy. However, the celebratory mood shifted in the post-match press interview when Vincent Kompany made an odd remark.

The Bafana Bafana striker’s return to action on Saturday night resonated deeply with the SA football community and Burnley FC fans, sparking waves of support and admiration.

It was a bittersweet night at Turf Moor. Lyle Foster’s comeback was met with delight, yet Burnley FC succumbed to a 2-0 defeat against Everton in a Premier League clash.

Foster stepped onto the pitch for the first time since October and injected a flicker of hope into the Clarets’ passionate supporters with his second-half performance.

For the last few weeks, Foster was put in the care of healthcare specialists at Burnley due to his mental health issues. As a result, he missed a few games for the relegation-threatened side and Bafana’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda last month.

Foster, an essential member of the Bafana squad, has been a mainstay in Burnley FC’s attack this season. The hitman has scored three goals and provided two assists in nine games across all competitions.

And despite returning to playing football and with Bafana coach Hugo Broos including the 23-year-old attacker in his preliminary AFCON squad, Burnley coach Kompany cast doubt on his player’s participation.

Kompany once again stated that Foster is not in a position to play at Africa’s showpiece, set to be staged in Ivory Coast in January 2024.

KOMPANY SAYS ‘IT WAS A SURPRISE’ TO SEE FOSTER RETURN

“It was a surprise to us as well [Foster return]. We hadn’t really expected that he was able to return,” he said. “But it was the opinion of the experts that keeping him in his natural environment was important.

“Football is part of his life; it’s something he needs to do to be happy as well. We were ready for anything, and 45 minutes physically was what he was able to do. In the second-half you could see how much of an impact he can have.

“I have to add that it’s really important not to confuse things. This is part of his process of getting back. It’s not like we can fly him all over the world now. This is just part of his return to health.

“We follow what the medical experts say. It’s step-by-step. It’s being with the team, being with people he considers his friends, and keeping a very small world for him. That seems to put him in a good place. This is just part of his recovery.”
