Why Mabhuti Khenyeza is against psychologists in football

Golden Arrows coach Mabhuti Khenyeza believes psychologists have no place in football especially when they have never played the game before. Khenyeza was asked whether he thinks his team would need a shrink after losing their six straight matches in all competitions on Sunday.

Abafana Bes’thende’s 2-1 loss against Orlando Pirates placed them at position seven on the log with 20 points. Arrows started the current season like a house on fire and spent some time at position two. But the recent results see them now trailing leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by 13 points.

Khenyeza has refused to entertain the idea of bringing in a psychologist saying he has been in a situation before and there is no need for such.

NO PLACE FOR PSYCHOLOGISTS IN FOOTBALL ACCORDING TO GOLDEN ARROWS COACH

“A psychologist doesn’t play football. They just wear a suit and a tie and read scriptures,” he said.

“I don’t believe in psychologists in football. We play football and what we have experienced in football we have been in these situations, I can’t bring someone who has never experienced that. Someone who sits behind the desk to study and graduates and then talks about what is happening in football.

“That person has never had this kind of experience, they have never been in the field with 50,000 [supporters]. The only thing that they focus on is to sit and go through [studying]. I don’t believe psychologists, maybe because of my background,” he added.

“I have played, [Musa] Bilankulu also played, we have been in this situation with the teams that we played for. We have been close to relegation with teams that we played for but we managed to come out.

“In the same team that we are at now, we have been close to relegation how many times? Last season something like that. Now if you bring a psychologist what are they going to talk about? He will give you quotes and never talk about situations in football.”
