Khanyisa Mayo declares ‘Bafana can win AFCON’, rates own chances sky-high
With the 2023 AFCON looming on the horizon, Cape Town City striker Khanyisa Mayo is setting his sights on a place in the final Bafana Bafana squad and harbouring dreams of continental glory.
Head coach Hugo Broos recently announced a preliminary squad, igniting fierce competition for selection. The team will convene for a pre-tournament camp in Stellenbosch early next year, gearing up for the January 16th kickoff.
Bafana are in group E with Mali, Namibia, and Tunisia. Mayo, currently tied for the league’s top scorer with seven goals, faces stiff competition for a spot in the final 23-man roster. The forward, however, believes his performance speaks volumes.
WHAT KHANYISA MAYO SAID ABOUT BAFANA BAFANA’S AFCON CHANCES
“As strikers, we are judged on goals,” Mayo told FARPost. “I think I’ve scored goals that help my team reach our targets, and yes, I feel I’ve done everything that I can control to be in the AFCON squad.”
His optimism extends beyond personal aspirations. “We can go all the way and win the AFCON,” Mayo declared. “The Rugby team [Springboks] showed us what we can achieve if we work hard and stick together.”
While Mayo dreams of continental glory, he will miss Cape Town City’s crucial clash against league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. He was sent off in the Western Cape Derby after picking two yellow cards. The City talisman will serve a one-match suspension, keeping him out of the highly anticipated Christmas Eve showdown at the DHL Stadium.
Despite the setback, Mayo’s unwavering enthusiasm embodies the spirit of Bafana Bafana’s AFCON hopes. Whether he makes the final cut or not, his belief in the team’s potential for success resonates with Bafana fans.
