Chiefs confirm Khune’s unavailability for Carling All-Stars clash
Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed that Itumeleng Khune won’t be available to participate in the Carling Black Label Cup next year following the announcement of the Carling All-Star XI.
The All-Star team will lock horns with the Carling Knockout Cup winners Stellenbosch FC on 6 January at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
The squad for the All-Star side was announced on Friday with Itumeleng Khune named in goals. However, this publication recently reported that Khune would not take part in the match due to his current suspension.
Chiefs have then released a statement, confirming that the 36-year-old wouldn’t partake in the clash.
The former Bafana Bafana captain was removed from all club activities after he was found guilty of breaking the club’s code of conduct. He arrived in training in Naturena under the influence of alcohol.
CHIEFS STATEMENT ON ITUMELENG KHUNE’S UNAVAILABILITY FOR CARLING BLACK LABEL CUP
“Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune, will not be available to participate in next month’s match between the Carling All-Stars and the winners of the 2023 Carling Knockout Cup, Stellenbosch FC,” the club announced via a statement.
“Despite being voted into the All-Stars line-up via a public poll, Khune is currently serving a suspension from all football-related activities at Kaizer Chiefs, and is therefore ineligible for selection.
“The player, as well as the PSL, have been informed of his unavailability and an announcement from the League and sponsors, Carling, regarding the make-up of the All-Star team will be made in due course.”
Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro will be spearheading the All-Star side. He will also have two assistant coaches from the DStv Diski Challenge Champions and runners-up from the previous season.
The other options Riveiro has for the goalie role will be the Buccaneers’ shot-stoppers Sipho Chaine and Zoey Monyepao.
