Middendorp brings in veteran defender to shore up CT Spurs’ defence

In a bid to fortify his backline, Cape Town Spurs head coach Ernst Middendorp has bolstered his squad with an experienced defender.

The Urban Warriors confirmed the acquisition of former Maritzburg United and Stellenbosch FC defender Rafiq De Goede on Tuesday, 26 December 2023.

Given De Goede’s experience of the beautiful game, he will be expected to bring stability and help the team survive the chop this campaign.

So far, the Cape club is having it hard in the top flight and everyone is feeling the pressure to save the team.

Spurs’ poor performance after gaining promotion to the DStv Premiership has raised many eyebrows, with football fanatics questioning the side’s individual quality.

The club’s string of poor results saw Spurs sack coach Shaun Bartlett, who played a significant role in helping them gain promotion to the elite league.

Middendorp was then appointed as the club’s new head coach to rescue the team from the sinking ship.

With that being said, De Goede will also be expected to guide the team’s youngsters in an enthusiastic manner in which will embrace the team and supporters, as he embodies the values of the club.

Spurs’ last game of the year will be against arch-rivals Cape Town City away from home on Sunday, 31 December 2023.

The Cape Town derby fixture will kick off at 15:30 at DHL Stadium.
