Hugo Broos announces final Bafana Afcon squad
Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has announced his final squad for the 2023 Afcon tournament in Ivory Coast. The 23 players were picked from the 50-man preliminary squad that Broos announced earlier this month.
The squad is set to assemble for camp on Thursday, 4 January 2024. They will then travel to Stellenbosch for a week-long training camp. Bafana Bafana are also scheduled to play a training match against Lesotho behind closed doors at the Lucas Moripe Stadium before departing for the Afcon tournament’s 34th edition.
The CAF showpiece will take place from 13 January to 11 February 2024. It will be hosted in the cities of Abidjan, Bouake, Korhogo, San Pedro and Yamoussoukro.
South Africa will be based in Korhogo and will play all their Group E matches at Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium. Only Tunisia and Bafana Bafana have won the tournament before in Group E. Mali’s best run in the tournament was a second finish in 1972. Namibia will be making their fourth appearance with all their three previous participation saw them eliminated in the group stages.
SOUTH AFRICA GUNNING FOR SECOND CONTINENTAL TITLE
This will be the 12th appearance by South Africa at the Africa Cup of Nations. Their best performance remains the historic 1996 Triumph on home soil under the guidance of the late Clive Barker. They came close in 1998 but lost in the final to Egypt under Jomo Sono. Bafana Bafana also finished third during the 2000 tournament held in Ghana and Nigeria.
BAFANA BAFANA FINAL AFCON SQUAD ANNOUNCED
South Africa and other nations at the tournament are allowed to replace a player in the final squad only due to a serious injury no less than 24 hours before the team’s first match. This is also subject to the approval of the medical certificate by the CAF Medical Committee.
