Mamelodi Sundowns sign Chippa United defender

Reigning DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns have made their first move in the January transfer window.

Sundowns announced the signing of a Chippa United defender ahead of next month’s mid-season transfer window.

The Brazilians have been enjoying a rich vein of form in the new season after winning 11 opening league games and drawing once.

They have already tasted silverware in the current campaign after winning the inaugural African Football League.

Sundowns defeated Morrocan giants Wydad Casablanca 3-2 on aggregate in a two-final in October 2023.

At the start of the season, the Brazilians made high-profile signings with the signing of Lucas Ribeiro, Thapelo Maseko, Lesiba Nku, and Junior Mendieta.

SUNDOWNS SNAP UP ZUKO MDUNYELWA

With the January transfer window looming large, Sundowns completed the signing of Zuko Mdunyelwa from Chippa United.

Mdunyelwa has been with the Chilli Boys for the past three seasons after signing from Cape Umoya United in 2021. The exciting wing-back has been crucial for Chippa after featuring in 13 appearances in the league.

Mdunyelwa will be competing with Khuliso Mudau and Thapelo Morena for the starting berth in the right-back position. Mudau has been the preferred choice for Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena in the right-wing-back position.

Both Morena and Mudau have been selected in the Bafana Bafana 23-men squad that will play in the AFCON showpiece staged at Ivory Coast in January 2024.

Mdunyelwa will face tough competition in making the right-back position his own given the qualities of both Morena and Mudau.

Meanwhile, Sundowns was scheduled to play a league match against Moroka Swallows on Wednesday at Loftus Stadium. However, the match didn’t take place with Swallows stating that they had ‘unresolved issues’ between players and management.

In their next match, Sundowns will face Polokwane City at Loftus Stadium as they look to bounce back from their draw against Cape Town City.
