Percy Tau extends trophy collection with latest Al Ahly triumph

Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau continues to etch his name in the record books of Egyptian giants Al Ahly, adding another glittering trophy to his already impressive collection.

On Thursday night, Tau played a part in Al Ahly’s dominant victory in the Egyptian Super Cup final. The new feat solidifies his status as one of South Africa’s most decorated footballers.

Ahly toiled to beat Modern Future 4-2 after extra time. The Cairo giants got their goals from Mahmoud Kahraba, Hussein El Shahat, Anthony Modeste and Karim Fouad. They took a first-half lead, before their opponents levelled terms late in the second half. Modern Future got their goals from Mohamed Mahmoud and Omar El Said, forcing the game into extra time.

With this latest triumph, Tau boasts a staggering seven trophies since joining Al Ahly in 2020.

Tau’s impact extends beyond mere silverware. His on-field leadership and dazzling attacking prowess have endeared him to the passionate Al Ahly faithful. The Witbank-born forward’s pace, trickery, and clinical finishing have terrorised defences across Africa and beyond, making him a vital cog in the team’s machine. His performance in the Egyptian Super Cup final, where he was a menace to the Modern Future defence, epitomised the importance of his role to the team’s success.

He has scored six goals in 18 appearances across all competitions this season. The 29-year-old recently became the first South African to win the CAF Inter-Club Player of the Year award.

He edged Mamelodi Sundowns’ Namibian goal machine Peter Shalulile and DR Congo forward Fiston Mayele of Egyptian club Pyramids FC.

He will shift his focus to the AFCON that roars to life on January 16, 2024, in Ivory Coast. The former Sundowns attacker was named in the final 23-man squad that will do battle for Bafana at AFCON.
