Chivaviro’s stunner secures a point for Chiefs
A stunning goal by substitute Ranga Chivaviro secured Kaizer Chiefs a 1-1 draw against Sekhukhune United at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday night. Chiefs came into the match on the back of three straight wins in the DStv Premiership.
Elias Mokwana scored the first goal of the match late in the first half with a stunning header from a Kamohelo Mokotjo cross. But substitute Ranga Chivaviro netted an equaliser with 10 minutes remaining to rescue a point for the Soweto Giants.
Chiefs made two changes from the team that beat Richards Bay last weekend with Sibongiseni Mthethwa coming in for Edson Castillo. Ashley Du Preez also came in for Christian Saile. Sekhukhune, on the other hand, made just one change with Kamohelo Sithole coming in for Thamsanqa Masiya.
KAIZER CHIEFS SETTLE FOR A POINT IN POLOKWANE
The home side put some pressure on the Chiefs defence in the early stages but there was no real threat. The first real chance of the match came in the 20th minute via Du Preez. But the forward failed to capitalise after being one-on-one with keeper Renaldo Leaner who made a brilliant save.
Defender Given Msimango missed a glorious opportunity to put Chiefs in the lead after a miscued shot unmarked inside the 18-yard box. Pule Mmodi also tried with a shot from outside the box moments later but it was easily saved by Leaner.
The goal finally came two minutes before the halftime break via a header from on-form winger Elias Mokwana after a cross by Kamohelo Mokotjo. The home side went to the halftime break leading by 1-0.
RANGA CHIVAVIRO SECURES A DRAW FOR AMAKHOSI
Chiefs came back into the second half a rejuvenated side after bringing in Saile in place of Gonzalez. Saile missed a sitter a few minutes after coming on with only the goalkeeper to beat. The Congolese winger’s shot went wide. Just when Sekhukhune thought they had secured the maximum points, Chivaviro fired home for Chiefs with a stunning shot from outside the box.
Amakhosi remain sixth on the log with 24 points from 16 matches. They trail log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by 11 points with Masandawana having three games in hand. Sekhukhune are in position 12 after 15 matches.
