Cape Town City to miss in-form striker in iKapa derby
Cape Town City will be without the services of their in-form striker when they take on Cape Town Spurs in the DStv Premiership on Sunday afternoon.
The match takes place at the Cape Town Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 pm.
This will be the second instalment of this iKapa derby after the first leg took place in September. The Citizens bagged the bragging rights with a 3-1 victory, a result that saw Shaun Bartlett lose his job.
It was the seventh defeat for Spurs following their promotion to the top-flight.
CAPE TOWN CITY TO MISS KHANYISA MAYO IN IKAPA DERBY
Eric Tinkler’s men will have to make do without the in-form Khanyisa Mayo who’s suspended after receiving a red card against Stellenbosch FC earlier this month. He will sit out his second match as he also missed a clash against Mamelodi Sundowns last week.
Mayo has been an outstanding performer for the Citizens in the past two years and finished the last season as a joint top goal scorer tied on 12 goals with Sundowns’ Peter Shalulile.
In the current campaign, he has already netted seven goals in 14 matches in the league. He has scored the same number of goals as Sundowns forward Lucas Ribeiro.
Mayo has been in the books of City for three seasons after being signed from Richards Bay FC. He joined them at the start of the 2021/22 campaign.
While the 25-year-old star remains one of the in-form strikers in South Africa, he was left out of the Bafana Bafana 23-man squad to participate in the 2024 AFCON.
Bafana head coach Hugo Broos opted for Orlando Pirates duo Zakhele Lepasa and Evidence Makgopa in the centre-forward position.
