‘This is absolutely disgusting’: Middendorp fires salvo after Spurs’ defeat

Under fire Cape Town Spurs coach Ernst Middendorp fired a salvo at the club’s fans, calling their behaviour “absolutely disgusting”.

His remarks, made during a SuperSport TV post-match interview, came after the struggling Cape Town outfit lost the iKapa Derby.

Cape Town City claimed bragging rights and ended the year on a high with a 2-0 victory over Spurs in the final DStv Premiership match of 2023. Despite Spurs’ early pressure, City’s defensive resilience and clinical finishing ultimately secured the win.

City got their goals through Relebohile Mokhuoane’s stunning free-kick and a Jaedin Rhodes tap-in after a brilliant attacking move.

The victory cements their dominance in the local derby and provides a boost heading into the league’s break for the AFCON. Spurs, on the other hand, have their fate worsen as they sunk deeper into the murky waters of relegation after 16 games played.

WHAT ERNST MIDDENDORP SAID AFTER SPURS’ DEFEAT

“I don’t know, you hear ‘coach must go’,” said the former Kaizer Chiefs coach. “That’s the fans from Cape Town Spurs, they shout, they make it very clear, ‘the coach must go’.

“Absolutely, I think the management must listen to them. This is absolutely disgusting despite the progress we’re making so far…

“But this is absolutely not working, and as I am saying, on the park and off the park, we have a lot of work to do.”

Middendorp joined Spurs after quitting his job with Tanzania’s Singida Fountain Gate just two weeks after taking over. The German took over a club that had only won one game. His best result was a draw, which leaves them with four points out of a possible 48 at the basement.

After the AFCON break in February, their first assignment is against Royal AM away in Durban on Valentine’s Day.
