Nengomasha reflects on his maiden milestone in Zimbabwe

Ex-Kaizer Chiefs anchorman Tinashe Nengomasha has reflected on a memorable transition after earning his major career milestone off the field.

The former midfielder, who left a trail of good memories at The Glamour Boys, is basking in glory in his new role as a team manager in Zimbabwe’s PSL.

His main career highlights were at Kaizer Chiefs, where he won the PSL Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year in 2004, among other titles.

Interestingly, the former Chiefs anchorman Tinashe Nengomasha never won anything in Zimbabwe as a player. Before moving to the DStv Premiership in SA, he had a brief spell at the now-defunct Black Aces in Zim, where the likes of Wilfred and William Mugeyi made their names.

However, ‘The General’, as Nengomasha is fondly known, finally won his first medal, albeit as a team manager.

NENGOMASHA REFLECTS ON HIS MILESTONE

He is in his second year as the team manager of Ngezi Platinum Stars, who won Zimbabwe’s 2023 PSL title.

And he is on cloud nine after finally winning something in his motherland, Zimbabwe.

“It’s been a very heartwarming experience. The transition produced quick results, and it’s something that I did not expect to come so early,” Nengomasha told FARPost.

“I took this job under Benjani Mwaruwari, who gave me the offer when he was appointed head coach. He left the club, and I remained behind. I met different challenges, but the main thing that has been worthwhile is seeing budding talents realise their goals.

“Everything makes sense if you’re working with people who have the same ambitions as you. You become a perfect example.

“And obviously, the greatest highlight for me was to be part of the team that won the league title. I never won this in Zimbabwe during my playing days.

“It wasn’t easy but worthwhile. At one moment, you fight among yourself as technical team members. But fighting for a good cause. At another moment, you fight with players who are unpredictable in their behaviour.”

HOW HIS EXPERIENCES AT KAIZER CHIEFS ARE BEING HELPFUL

Nengomasha added: “The advantage is that I have the background of having been a player, so some of the behaviours are not new to me. My experiences as a Kaizer Chiefs player are coming in handy because how we acted is similar to how these boys are doing their things.

“The main difference is that the game has grown and that there is a lot of exposure in all respects.

“So I always urge these boys to maximise on the opportunities that they get because a footballer’s career is quick to end.”
