Former Chiefs defender on why Johnson deserves another season

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender David Kannemeyer has given his opinion on why the club should stick with interim coach Calvin Johnson beyond this season.

Johnson joined Amakhosi ahead of the current 2023/24 PSL season as the Head of Academy. He lasted a few months on the job as in October 2023 he took over from Molefi Ntseki.

Ntseki was dismissed as Chiefs head coach after struggling with consistency and grinding positive results.

Under the guidance of Johnson, the Soweto giants seem to be slowly finding the right balance and their groove back. They are unbeaten in their last four DStv Premiership games, winning three and drawing one.

In the seven league matches that Johnson has managed, The Glamour Boys have won four, drew one and suffered two defeats.

DAVID KANNEMEYER BACKS CALVIN JOHNSON FOR A PERMANENT JOB

Kannemeyer is backing Calvin Johnson for a permanent job, saying it will be a mistake if Chiefs go back into the market and look for another coach.

“Chiefs will not be thinking straight [if they look for another coach]. Why go for another coach while he’s still there now? I think they should just give him a permanent job and trust him,” Kannemeyer told FARPost.

“Why go look outside? If you look in the last nine years, they’ve changed coaches, and it didn’t work.

“Obviously, then it’s not the coaches, but a bigger problem is within the group. Is the group good enough?”

Despite Johnson’s fair start after being appointed interim coach, Kannemeyer has warned the players to stay calm and keep on working hard.

“I will say so [it’s a good start], but there’s still a long way to go. I don’t think people must get excited; the coach said it himself,” he added.

“They [players] must stay calm and keep on working hard. Hopefully, he [Johnson] can bring in more results.”
