Chiefs players hand All-Stars historic Carling Cup triumph
Kaizer Chiefs stars played a key role as Carling All-Stars secured a historic 2-1 win over Stellenbosch FC in a Carling Cup clash at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The All-Stars team made a name for themselves and became the first All-Stars side to be engraved on the beautiful Carling Cup trophy.
Below are the talking points from this mouthwatering showpiece between Carling Knockout champions, Stellies, and All-Stars.
KAIZER CHIEFS PLAYERS SHINES
Mfundo Vilakazi of Kaizer Chiefs showed what he’s capable of as he broke the deadlock just four minutes into the show.
For a player who plays in the DStv Diski Challenge [DDC], this will be memorable for him.
In the 12th minute of the contest, Ashley Du Preez scored the second for the All-Stars from a spot kick. Mervin Boji scored the only goal for Stellenbosch in the last minutes of the match.
ITUMELENG KHUNE FEATURED IN ALL CARLING CUP COMPETITIONS
Itumeleng Khune is the only player to have featured in all 11 competitions of the Carling Cup.
With all that experience, Khune delivered what was expected of him. He had a bigger role in this tie given his extensive experience of the beautiful game.
To add to that, Khune has eight most starts as a player in the tournament. He’s equal with former Orlando Pirates skipper Happy Jele.
ATHENKOSI MCABA SENT OFF
Athenkosi Mcaba was sent off in the 64th minute of the game for a dangerous tackle on Jabulani Mokone.

Here are the eleven coaches that have won the tournament since its launch in 2011.
The 11 are Julio Leal [Orlando Pirates, 2011], Augusto Palacios [Orlando Pirates, 2012], Stuart Baxter [Kaizer Chiefs, 2013 and 2021], Eric Tinkler [Orlando Pirates, 2014 and 2015], Steve Komphela [Kaizer Chiefs, 2016 and 2017], Milutin Sredojevic [Orlando Pirates, 2019], Rulani Mokwena [Mamelodi Sundowns, 2022] and Jose Riveiro [ Carling All-Stars, 2023]
