Ex-Chiefs & Sundowns star drops knowledge bombs for young coaches

Ex-Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns star David Kannemeyer has shared valuable coaching insights for young SA coaches to have successful careers.

Many young coaches are struggling to get coaching gigs due to stiff competition on the field. In addition, many of the PSL clubs prefer to hire coaches with a proven track record and experience.

Recently, the former Bafana Bafana international Kannemeyer was linked with a move to an unknown Namibian club. Previously, the 46-year-old has coached the likes of now-defunct Cape Town All Stars and Magic FC in the second-tier league.

DAVID KANNEMEYER SAYS SA YOUNG COACHES SHOULD MOVE TO OTHER COUNTRIES

The former Kaizer Chiefs defender, Kannemeyer, says young coaches should consider looking for jobs across the border to have a successful career.

A great example is SA-born mentor Morena Ramoreboli, who is coaching in Botswana. Last season, the 42-year-old defied all odds, winning the Botswana Premier League. This campaign, Ramoreboli has reached the group stages of the CAF Champions League with Jwaneng Galaxy.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for us young South African coaches to go out to other countries, explore and build our reputation,” Kannemeyer told FARPost.

“It will give us more experience preparing for the future and more recognition to get better opportunities and jobs.

“Here in South Africa, there are fewer opportunities for us young coaches to get jobs at higher levels, DStv Premiership or Motsepe Foundation Championship. It’s always that one small circle of coaches that keeps on rotating, getting jobs. But we have the right qualifications [CAF B License].”

EX-CHIEFS AND SUNDOWNS STAR OPEN TO COACHING OUTSIDE OF SOUTH AFRICA

Kannemeyer, who also donned the Mamelodi Sundowns jersey, further revealed that if an opportunity comes up to coach outside the country, he will grab it with both hands. He’s open to new challenges.

“You will never know what the future holds; if an opportunity comes, I definitely will take it,” he added.
